Jana brushed my hair each morning,
Packed my lunch, sent me out the door.
Note in my Holly Hobbie lunchbox,
Said "Let the whole world hear you roar!"
We both grew up, still same town,
Though in separate homes we now stayed.
I thought she'd always be around,
And then Jana just lost her way.
Silas rolled up on his chopper,
Leather jacket, tight worn denim.
First look, Jana's face flushed red,
Blue eyes, bright smile hid his venom.
She thought her love would fix his heart,
Gave him all her nights and days.
But that turn for better never starts,
And then Jana just changed her ways.
She quit her job, she quit her laughter,
She'd drive her old red truck down the street.
She'd wave, thin smile, but never stop,
Reply "Real soon!" when I'd text "Let's meet!".
She used to shine like morning light,
Now shadows stole her every day.
Neighbors heard shouts most every night,
And then Jana just couldn't stay.
Break of dawn she came to meet me,
Headlights cutting through the rain.
Said, “He found out, tried to beat me…
But he won’t again.”
I asked her what she meant by that,
Her voice grew faint, her eyes astray.
She kissed my hair, straightened my hat,
And then Jana just wouldn’t say.
She pulled me close and hugged me tight,
Whispered, “Be more than your mistakes.”
Got back in her truck, turned the key,
And right then I learned how a heart breaks.
She said, “Andi, don't ever stop roaring,
I know we're both due for brighter days.”
