#113 EVERYTHING SHOWER
#113 EVERYTHING SHOWER
(Americana)
(DEMO)
(Full Arrangement)
Hadn't seen you for years,
Then one day on the street.
Crooked smile, bright green eyes,
There you were -- late summer heat.
Still crossed your arms when you laughed hard,
Ducked into Murphy's for a cold beer.
Your sweet breath warm, dark beard scratchy,
Slow words whispered in my ear.
Kitchen table, sorting notes and brochures,
The chapel, the vows and the flowers.
Time marches on -- we're getting close,
Weeks and days down to just hours
Heart's thumping, I start to tear up,
And now my vision blurs.
Need a glass of rosé, a good cry
and a slow everything shower.
Winter wedding -- first week of the year,
Writing invites, curled up by the fire.
Yellow-gold leaves flash by the window,
November winds lift them all higher.
Courthouse visit, holiday week,
Skeleton staff, no-one in line.
License trembles in my hands,
Back in three days with it signed.
Kitchen table, night before wedding
The chapel, the vows and the flowers.
Time marches on -- we're getting close,
Weeks and days down to just hours
Heart's thumping, I start to tear up,
And now my vision blurs.
Need a glass of rosé, a good cry
and a slow everything shower.
Kissed me when you left early for work,
Lunchtime -- Watching snowflakes, eating yoghurt.
Blanket-wrapped, window seat, front sitting room.
Empty feeling inside, now tipped to gloom.
Forehead pressed against the cold window glass,
Later rosé and tears -- feeling doesn't pass.
Night before wedding dinner -- us two at Manfredi's,
More rosé in the bathroom as I get ready.
You see what my face shows when I walk through the door,
Then I watch your smile slide slowly to the floor.
Kitchen table, tossing notes and brochures,
The chapel, the vows and the flowers.
Time marches on -- to where, only knows,
Weeks and days undone in just hours
Heart's still beating, face wet with tears,
Vision once again blurs.
A glass of rosé, a good cry,
And a long, slow everything shower.
