Two Steps From The Edge

He walks steady through the lobby,
Tailored pin-striped suit, charcoal grey.
Smiles when the teller waves him forward,
Hands her the letter, asks "How's your day?"
She opens, reads -- wrinkles her brow, starts to speak,
He says "Keep quiet, don't be afraid."
She's now frozen, wide-eyed -- he sighs,
Opens his coat, shows her the grenade.

One beat you're walking through the valley,
The next you're standing on the ledge.
Quick look back, then inching forward,
Only two steps from the edge.

Foil torched black, greasy smoke inhaled,
Still in her scrubs -- she chases the rush.
Kitchen counter, small smudge from the burn,
Pupils wide, racing heart, face now flushed.
Penthouse terrace, looking out on the town,
Four AM, faint echo below -- a yelled-out warning.
Sips her imported bottled water,
Laying back, she waits for morning.

In your dreams you recall the valley,
But then you wake up on the ledge.
Once again start inching forward,
Only two steps from the edge.

Counts the money in his car -- quick breaths, wide eyes,
Looks down at his shaking hands -- then he laughs til he cries.
Terrace sunrise -- still sipping water, wide awake,
She looks at her hands -- not even the slightest shake.

Done your time walking through that valley,
At home now standing on this ledge.
Feel a charge from inching forward,
Only two steps from the edge.

Who you were lived in the valley,
Who you are stands tall upon the ledge.
The sweet release of inching forward,
Now only one step from the edge.
