#135 FORMER CORNER BALCONY
(Americana)

Former Corner Balcony

Just two steps in, I told her we'd buy it.
Penthouse apartment -- see the whole town.
She watched me making deals, cooking, smiling,
I watched her, twirling in that ballgown.

Most evenings, I'll head over there,
Parked car, up-angled mirror -- then stare,
Even though I don't want to see.
Where fine meals and dancing used to be,
My former corner balcony.

Our rooms filled with the best decor and baubles,
Drink fine red wine, choose 'tween Lotus or Bentley.
Every night, gaze down from our perch,
Every day, more deals and piling on plenty.

Lots of evenings, I'll head over there,
Parked car, up-angled mirror -- just stare,
Even though I can't bear to see.
Where all the best and most used to be,
My former corner balcony.

Back then I had plenty -- still wanted more,
Risky deal -- huge loss chasing another score.
Thought this broken deal -- just one with more sting,
I couldn't fix it, started throwing things.
She always said money didn't matter to her,
I'm broke, she leaves -- money at least preferred.
Court orders me to vacate -- don't fuss or shout,
Sat on my balcony 'til they escort me out.

Next time I head over there,
Stand by my car, directly stare,
Even though it crushes me to see.
Where the life I used to hold, used to be,
That former corner balcony.

Stand for an hour -- the daylight slowly fades,
Streetlights push back against gathering shade.
Balcony lights turn on -- breeze ruffles the trees,
In my car I slowly sigh, then turn the key.
