That Depends

"That depends," I tell the guys at work,
"She gets me, but I just don't know."
Look away, start tidying my desk.
John smiles when I say "Taking it slow."
Next day, lunch out back, watching the ducks,
John takes a bite, turns, leans in close.
Says "Had a girl, mystery for five years,"
"But with some, one look and you know."

Tries to hide how he feels,
What he knows, just won't say.
Grins and shrugs to the end,
When a man says "That depends."

"That depends." I say to mom and dad,
Dad leans back in his chair, gives a nod.
Says "Bring her by for a cup of coffee,"
"Now your mother always tells me don't prod."
Mom just looks and tilts her head,
I may be selling, but she ain't bought.
Nods, then small smile when she sees me,
Change the subject on the spot.

Watch them hem and then haw,
Something slips -- can't walk it back.
To their moms and their friends,
When a man says "That depends."

We're in my car, not yet driving,
Scared to look at you, know you're crying.
You turn away, shoulders shaking,
I breathe slowly, can't risk breaking.
Silence, watch the wipers work the rain.
You turn sharply, ask me to explain.
Why you're hearing about us from your friends,
That I keep saying "That depends."

"That depends," I say straight to you,
"I can't... I don't know... I get scared."
Look at you, then away, then look back,
"I love you. And I need to share."
Finally said it, in this car, in the rain,
I laugh, so much for all my plans.
Your bright blue eyes look right through me,
You reach out, hold my hand.

Eyes slowly open, smell your hair,
Feel the love, then get scared.
Promise me, God, don't let this end,
That's why I say "That depends."

Faye, you cracked me wide open.
Woke up this rusty heart.
One day I won't say it, but 'til then,
Less and less "That depends."
