#101 WAITING

#101 WAITING
(Americana)

Waiting

Waiting in line at the phone store,
Carpet smells like an old damp dog.
Old lady -- raincoat, texting and crying,
Scowling guy at the counter -- nametag says "Rod."

They say life's a journey, both hard and great,
Ready to get started? Get ready to wait.

Waiting in line at the grocery,
Lady behind me -- twenty-nine kiwis and duct tape.
Guy in front of me -- eight roasted chickens, case of beer,
Try to back out, lady blocks my escape.

They say life's a rich banquet -- served up on a plate.
Ready to dig in? Get ready to wait.

Waiting in line at the stadium,
Ball game just started -- hear the crowd roar.
Drunk couple swearing at the gate guard,
Seat's sticky with spilled soda, dried gum on the floor.

They say life is a gift -- wonders await.
Ready to enjoy them? Get ready to wait.

Be patient, real soon, hang in there.
You're next in line for customer care.
Not quite, almost, just a slight delay,
While you wait, care to fill out a short survey?

Waiting in the lobby, cancer doctor,
Young bald girl in headphones, smile so wide.
Nurse takes me back, asks "How's your day?"
Next patient in this room, wonder what they'll decide...

I say life's a long line, always running late.
By yourself, but not alone. -- We all wait.
