#102 THE BALLAD OF JONAS & JO-ALICE
#102 THE BALLAD OF JONAS & JO-ALICE
(Americana)
(DEMO)
(Full Arrangement)
Jonas Weebler started
his last day with quiet purpose.
Jo-Alice Murphy started
her first day with a good cry.
Side by side -- sour crowded bus,
Sat together for five stops, no speaking.
Stormy Thursday, heavy rain,
Dark and swirling slate-grey sky.
Most days just fizzle and fade out,
But some days hand us stories to tell.
A that-day-when type of day,
That-day-when type of day.
Jonas learned he's being let go,
Nineteen good years, worked hard at the plant.
Decided to visit the big boss,
Shake the man's hand, have a little chat.
Jo-Alice lip-biting worried -- very first day,
New job, specialist in accounting.
Faked two-thirds of her latest resume,,
Breathes deep as she fusses with her backpack.
Most days we never remember,
But some days deliver tales worth telling.
A that-day-when type of day,
That-day-when type of day.
New boss, just a kid. Stands right up
When Jonas walks through the door.
Says "Are you here to shoot me?"
Jonas sighs, tosses his exit folder on the floor.
Jo-Alice spent her morning checking numbers,
Emailed results, then she had a meeting.
"Jo-Alice... you saved us a million five. Pretty good start."
Her boss's first words to her in greeting.
Most days we toss when they're finished,
But a few hang on as clear as yesterday.
A that-day-when type of day,
That-day-when type of day.
Early evening, pleasant sunshine,
Nice change after a stormy afternoon.
Jo-Alice beaming, shoulders swaying,
On the crowded bus home,
headphones playing her tunes.
Glances down at Jonas, walking towards the harbor,
Bound for some dark bar -- neat whiskey in the gloom.
