#106 I AIN’T ASKING

#106 I AIN'T ASKING
(Americana)

I Ain't Asking

Dry cleaners, rainy morning,
"Light starch please" -- Once again, girl rolls her eyes.
Familiar frustration now building,
Deep breath, clenched hands against my thighs.
Then without warning, something breaks,
Exhale slowly, hands no longer tight.
I lean forward, look her dead in the eyes,
Smiling, I say "Do it, and do it right."

Shirts on the counter, dry cleaning days,
My ticket filled out without delay.
Here's where I started choosing my way,
And it's clear that I ain't...
Asking.

Knock on big boss door mid-morning,
He scowls, says "Cora, now's not a good time."
I just walk in, stand next to his desk,
He sighs, stops writing, says "Fine."
Tell him I'm moving into the open office,
And the Taylor project, makes sense for me to run.
I stare. He says "Office yes, Taylor no... Okay?"
Nod my head. "Good. Drawings to get done!"

A new office to enjoy every day,
Tell the boss when I've something to say.
Place changed when I changed my way,
By now clear that I ain't...
Asking.

Kids couch lounging when I got home,
Hug them both, say "I've stopped doing chores alone."
Longer talk with Silas much later that night,
Tell him things are now different -- he tries to fight.
He scowls and says "So what, you've just up and changed?"
I smile, "Just see what happens -- that will explain."

Step into my life, day after day,
Without doubt, or retreat, or delay.
My changes are here to stay,
Whatever the day brings, I ain't...
Asking.

Three A.M. -- Whole house is sleeping,
Kitchen counter, eating ice cream, softly laughing.
Wonder what will happen tomorrow?
I do know one thing -- I ain't asking.
