Skinny Lilly

Bully Brenda shouted at attendance,
"At lunch time Lilly's gonna get it."
Twenty years ago -- sixth grade classroom,
And still I can't forget it.
We all turned and looked at Lilly,
By the bookshelves near the window.
She tilts her head before she nods,
But I saw her tremble, then swallow.

Skinny Lilly, sweet silly-billy,
Tallest twelve-year-old in southwest Philly.
Bully Brenda tried to end her,
She stood alone, no-one defends her.
Your true you is simply not,
What we decide to call you.

Miss Vance says something about Paul Revere,
No one's listening, we're all passing notes.
Chris Belmonte's taking bets,
Whispers "Skinny Lilly's got zero votes!"
Morning recess, Matty Moore asks her,
"What did Lilly do? Must be something!"
Bully Brenda flicks his ear, then snickers,
Quick shrug -- "Stupid broomstick had it coming."

Skinny Lilly, sweet silly-billy,
Tallest twelve-year-old in southwest Philly.
Bully Brenda tried to end her,
She stood alone, no-one defends her.
Your true you is simply not,
What we decide to call you.

Lunch-time -- schoolyard doors open, we all rush out,
Someone trips and tumbles with a shout.
We make a large circle around the two fighters,
And when things start, we crowd in tighter.
As Bully Brenda swings, Lilly keeps her near,
Steps inside the swing, grabs her, whispers in her ear.
Then five long seconds I count in my head,
Before Brenda starts crying like her dog was dead.

Skinny Lilly, sweet silly-billy,
Tallest twelve-year-old in southwest Philly.
Bully Brenda tried to end her,
Skinny Lilly chanced to friend her.
Your true you is simply not,
What we decide to call you.

Who cares what the world,
Decides to call you.
