#112 MIRROR QUESTIONS
(Americana)
(DEMO)
(Full Arrangement)
The days and the people,
And the stories all change.
The guests move on,
But still the mirror remains.
She strikes her pose, then gazes into,
Full-length mirror by the door.
Yet one more afternoon hotel room,
Tear-streaked mascara, head to toe Dior.
Checks her phone, ignores the texts,
Slowly blots the streaks beneath her eyes.
Back to perfect in only minutes,
Spends her time until the client on practice smiles.
Why does love fade so fast?
Why is the journey home so vast?
Why are you now ashes held in brass?
The mirror questions we never ask.
Never ask... never ask.
Jack drops his cuff-link by the mirror,
Sharp back pain when he bends down.
Stands up, tapes a drawing to the mirror,
In crayon, says "Miss you Papa!" He just frowns.
Later, curled up on the bed,
Rubs his back, turns on the bedside light.
Gets up, stares at the mirror and the drawing,
The words blur, his eyes now shining bright.
Why does love fade so fast?
Why is the journey home so vast?
Why are you now ashes held in brass?
The mirror questions we never ask.
Never ask... never ask.
Ted stands unsteady by the mirror,
Stares closer, then blinks to see clearer.
Grabs both cheeks, pulls his mouth down,
Then pulls both sides up -- now an angry clown.
Brass urn on the desk, polished to a gleam,
Room service soup warm enough to steam.
Crying, says "Daddy" then touches the brass,
Grabs the bowl, throws it at the mirror glass.
Why does love fade so fast?
Why is the journey home so vast?
Why are you now ashes held in brass?
The mirror questions we never ask.
Never ask.. never, ever ask.
Housekeeping cart, maid rolls in, starts her chores,
Sheets tangled and torn, towels on the floor.
Starts at the mirror, soup splatter a surprise,
Bends over wiping, shakes her head and sighs.
