Little Whisper

Walking back to my office,
From the Monday group meeting.
She's right in my ear, saying
"They all can see you're overeating."
Thursday evening, working late,
Complete the last minute filing.
Press send, then she's right there, saying:
"Deadline almost missed, yet you're still smiling..."

I try ignoring, distracting, pleading,
But I guess she's here to stay.
Can't give a smile, hear a kind word,
Make it to the end of the day.
Without the little whisper
Dropping by to have her say.

Up at five AM on the treadmill,
Audiobook -- how the west was won.
Full sweat, earbuds out when finished,
She says "Stop slouching when you run."
Vintage shopping, run into Sarah,
And her fiance on the avenue.
We catch up, plan drinks next week. Whisper says
"Marrying him? Better than you'll ever do!"

I try ignoring, distracting, pleading,
But I guess she's here to stay.
Can't give a smile, hear a kind word,
Make it to the end of the day.
Without the little whisper
Popping up to have her say.

Friday lunch time, crowded elevator,
Next to Janet and that girl from estates.
We all nod and smile at each other,
I look down -- freeze solid at my mistake.
Grabbed my heels in a rush this morning,
Wanted scarlet, somehow wearing plum.
Whisper hisses in both ears,
"My god, you cannot be that dumb!"
Janet looks down, smiles and says:
"Perfect shoes! -- You're ready for court."
Other girl looks, also smiles and nods,
I just start laughing til I snort.

I'll keep ignoring, distracting, pleading,
Acting like she's here to stay.
I'll give smiles, accept kind words,
Make it to the end of the day.
Try talking back to the little whisper,
She doesn't always get the last say.

I'll keep reminding myself that
What she's saying is so darn dumb.
Might get the little whisper,
Every now and then,
To hold her silly little tongue.
