#118 SWITCH THE FINISH
#118 SWITCH THE FINISH
(Americana)
(DEMO)
(Full Arrangement)
Ran into you at Tomkin's bookstore,
Pretended it was just by chance.
"Has it really been six months?" I asked.
Then you asked me "Why houseplants?"
Looked down at the book I was holding,
Made up some story about the prop.
You said I looked good, quick hug good-bye,
As I shelved the book, said to myself "Just stop!"
It was great at the beginning,
Even better when we were in it.
Each and every day, we found a way
To keep the record spinning.
I was shocked when the music stopped,
Need to wind back time to the start.
Then we'll go once again, all the same,
Just switch the finish.
Ran into you at The Strand weeks later,
This time it really was by chance.
Smiled wide, but inside kicked myself,
You always went when they played "Shall We Dance?"
You said you're coming to the office party,
Okay with me? I nodded "That sounds great!"
You headed for your seat, I bought some popcorn,
Then you doubled back, said "I'm bringing a date."
It was great at the beginning,
Even better when we were in it.
Each and every day, we found a way
To keep the record spinning.
I was shocked when the music stopped,
Need to wind back time to the start.
Then we'll go once again, all the same,
Just switch the finish.
Office party -- my date is carefully explaining,
The book she's reading -- dragon planet, always raining.
You come up the stairs, alone, bright eyes, pinching your nose,
You'd say "It hides my crying" I'd say "Everyone knows."
Date says she can tell I'm a reader -- "Guys never keep track."
I go to check on you -- tell my date I'll be right back.
A man walks up to you, I see something I can't erase,
A look that goes from relief to joy, lighting up your face.
It was great from the beginning,
And perfect when we were in it.
Each and every day, we found the way
To keep our record spinning.
But now the music's long gone stopped,
Going back means a different start,
We'd go again, but not the same...
So maybe... just keep the finish.
