#123 THIS BUMPY HEART

(Americana)

(Full Arrangement)
John and Rachel's wedding invite,
You're holding in your hand.
You ask me "How'd you miss this?"
"And then go make other plans."
Frowning by the kitchen table, you say
"It's like you just don't listen anymore."
I say a flustered sorry, sweating by the sink,
Then shoo you off the fresh-waxed floor.
Not yet a dark storm sweeping in,
Sure to rage and blow us apart.
But small clouds now start to gather,
On the edge of this bumpy heart.
Our evening walk, October chill,
I stumble, you ask again about the wreck.
I fight the urge to yell, then stop and turn,
Say "There's traffic cams you can check."
You shake your head and sigh, touch my arm,
"Please hear me -- and help me learn."
I take a breath, then say "I just spaced out"
"And didn't see the other car when I turned."
Now that dark storm's getting closer,
Eager to rage and blow us apart.
More heavy clouds keep gathering,
Greying the edge of this bumpy heart.
After a dragging week of shouts and silence,
In the kitchen you say "Space outs? I'm not convinced."
Frowning, you set down today's stack of mail,
Your face tired, eyes steady -- "Don't want us to fail."
Say you need a walk -- decide about us,
Think we should pause things before we lose all trust.
Now alone, mail spread out on the table, tears starting,
In my hand, thank you card from John and Rachel's wedding.
Darkness surges all around and in me,
Eager to rage and blow us apart.
But bad weather won't be defeating
This strong and steady and still-beating
Bumpy heart.
It's night when you suddenly appear,
I'm slumped at the table, staring at the mail.
I notice the breath I'm still holding,
Close my eyes, then slowly exhale.
