Another Dark Corner Sunday

Paul pretends to ask what I'm drinking,
Then shakes his head, laughs and pours.
Head over to my favorite far corner,
By the broken jukebox, that hole in the floor.
I see familiar green eyes in the doorway,
If he brings up our daughter, good chance I'll scream.
No time for his bullshit dragging down my days,
While what should have been darkens my dreams.

Another day, day drinking in darkness,
The whiskey drowns you and takes you away.
Share some smokes, a cough or two -- share some stories,
No bright lights in a dark corner Sunday.

Yeah, that green-eyed jerk's my ex-husband,
Hitched on a bender, pregnant on a dare.
My face stone-steady as he smiles and waves,
Nod to Paul for another, lean back in my chair.
Turn to my right, ask Randy for a light,
Turn back, those green eyes now right by my side.
Taps on the table, says it's hard to reach me,
If I checked my voicemail, I'd see he tried.

Spend the whole day, day drinking in darkness,
The whiskey dulls you, turns everything grey.
Share some smokes, a cough or two -- share some stories,
Biding time in a dark corner Sunday.

I sigh, tell him get on with what he needs to say,
He leans in, says he's now sober and leaving for L.A.
"I got dry to honor Sadie. You should try the same."
I stand up, clenched fists, yell "Don't ever speak her name."

These endless days, day drinking in darkness,
Whiskey don't tell you the cost, just makes you pay.
Share some smokes, a cough or two -- share some stories,
Dragging through another dark corner Sunday.

Guess I should head to a meeting,
Stand up, shout and cry all about it.
I'm a careful driver, even with a small buzz.
Want to deal with traffic right now? I kind of doubt it.
