Bound For Left

In my car, dead-stop on the highway,
Your face pressed against the glass.
I can tell you're in a mood,
Can't tell how long it'll last.
Twenty minutes pass, we're still not moving.
You say "We're never breaking free."
Point at cars speeding by the other way
Say "Smiling, going places -- How things should be!"

You told me you needed changes,
I figured just another test.
So you drove off -- headed for leaving,
And after that you're bound for left.

On our front porch, windy afternoon,
Nailing back that rail -- been broken a while.
You come out and watch, standing silent,
I say "See! I'm handy!" give a big smile.
After dinner that night, you're washing plates,
Turn from the sink, sigh and ask "Ever want more?"
I grab the pizza box off the table,
Toss tonight's box on the pile by the door.

You kept saying it's all gone wrong,
I kept my head down, ignored the mess.
So you drove right straight through leaving,
And now you're bound for left.

Turn onto our street, I see from afar,
You putting two new suitcases in your car.
I pull in, you pull out -- scowling, shaking your head,
Next two days eating take-out, stacking mail unread.
Noise at our front door while I'm scrubbing clean a pot,
Open it smiling, expecting you -- of course it's not.

Now leaving's well past your rear-view,
On my empty doorstep -- an unwanted guest.
I get to welcome heartache,
Right when you arrive in left.
